RE: luxury 5th wheel

:? You paint Keystone with a broad brush. Have you checked Montana fivers? They have been the # 1 selling 5th wheel for 6 years for some reason. And a lot of Montana owners are on their 2nd or 3rd one. We're on our 2nd. Also, don't rely on model numbersd to determine length on Montanas. Our 2955RL was 33', this 3000RK is 36'. :R

RE: When do you NEED to trade vehicles...

:C I guess it depends how whimsical your partner is. In '06 we were on our way to a mall not far from us and the gal I live with wanted to stop a a car dealer that had just opened. We are, at the time, driveing an '03 Toyota Camry XLE with 13000 miles on it. Two hours later we left the dealer driveing a Lexus ES and it was paid for. Last week we were comming home from a place in Illinois and passed the only Infiniti dealer in the area. I had to literally drag her out of there or we'd have had a new one. The Lexus only has 21000 miles on it. In April of '03, we had an '01 Cummins with 50,000 miles. Went to a Dodge dealer to check on some tires. When we left, they'd sold me a set of tires for $40,000 and gave me a truck to hang them on. :S

RE: PLEASE AIM YOUR HEAD LIGHTS

:C If we're out so late we need lights, I've done something wrong. We try to get off the road by 3:30 or 4. I do turn on the light in rain or other bad weather. :)

RE: Exhaust Brake

:) For those that think revs are unimportant with a "pac-brake", check the increase in stopping horsepower with the increase in rpms. http://www.pacbrake.com/index.php?page=tow-haul-mode-vs-prxb-exhaust-brake

:D A "loose nut behind the steering wheel" is about the same as a "short circuit between the seat and steering wheel." :W

RE: 300 HP CAT W/860HP LB-FT TORQUE, OPINIONS

:) One thing that might enter into your thoughts is how Cummins & Cat rate their engines. Back when I was driveing the biguns, it was explained that Cummins built an engine, put it on an engine dyno and tested it. That was their "advertised horsepower and torque at the flywheel." Then they put the accessories on. Alternator, water pump, fan and what ever else that was needed for the application. Caterpillar built the engine with all the accssories needed, then put it on the dyno. That was their advertised HP. I have put a lot of miles on a 3406B Cat set at 425HP and it would walk all over 444HP Cummins. I've driven both of them nearly a million miles each in 40+ years of driveing. I will say that they both may have changed their methods since I retired in 1993. :B On edit, another thought comes to mind: If you're driveing a DP, you probably have a big 24" or larger cooling fan in it. If it is belt driven and you are climbing a hill with your unit and that fan kicks in, you've just lost 27 wheel horsepower.

RE: Autoweek article on the 4.5 Duramax

:B FWIW, Cummins had a V-8 back in the 60's. (as did Mack) It was called V-903. They still make V-8s, but for marine, industrial, railroad applications. A 12 or 16 cylinder 3500HP in-line might be a little long. :W

RE: Breakway Switch (cable)

Twisting the chains to shorten them is the only DOT approved way between trailers or on JifLok tractors. And the chains are supposed to be crossed under the tongue on ANY hooh-up requiring chains so the tongue doesn't drop on the pavement in case of separatuon.

RE: Fiver with side bath

Check out the 3465SA Montana. 38' 5" long. It might be worth noting that Montana has been the # 1 best selling 5th wheel for 6 years running. Also, don't count on Montana numbrs to see how long it is. Numbers are irrelevant on them. Our 2955RL was 33' long. Our 3000RK is 36' 2" nose cap to ladder.

RE: The Truck (Dually) for Me?

If you get a dually, you almost need 4 wheel drive. You'll get stuck on wet grass, loose gravel or whatever. Also, any time you turn, you scuff 6 tires. Be prepared to buy more rubber. As for the Dodge, I didn't like Chrysler products either but when we went from a class "A" to a 5th wheel, Dodge was the only TV with an engine.

RE: 2006-7 Cummins owners...

One might keep in mind that, unless Cummins has changed the set-up, the 6.7 with a 6 speed manual tranny is de-rated to 325/600 HP/Torque. Same as my 5.9.

RE: My first diesel! My first tow report!

I too, remember my first diesel. Brand new 1962 International Fleetstar with a 6-71N two cycle Detroit diesel in it. 238 HP. Also had a 5 speed box and 3 speed rears. My Cummins has more power and torque than that Detroit did. The exhaust brakes that Cummins put on the Dodges assumes that an INTELLIGENT driver knows enough to gear down on long or steep downgrades. It will most assuradly hold you back. I've taken max wt.(80,000lbs & not with the Dodge) down Cajon, Grapevine, Tahatchapi, Donner, Monteagle, and Sandhill without touching the brakes. Enjoy your ride.

RE: My first diesel! My first tow report!

I see there are a couple people on here that should stay with a Hemi or similar gas engine. They're not good enough drivers to trust with a diesel. Horsepower takes you down the road a little: Torque takes you up the hills. And Cummins has low end torque. It makes no difference what gear you're in, if you're running nicely down the road at low RPM and want more speed and you gently mash the throttle and it picks up RPMs, you're NOT lugging the engine. It's when you stick your foot in the pump and it doesn't accelerate that you're lugging. As far as gas engines are concerned, unless you drive pretty regularly at Daytona Beach where you're turning 5000+ RPMs, you have only a fraction of the horsepower available. And as you go up from sea level, it drops even more. My Cummins about the same torque/HP on Wolfcreek Pass (11500') as it does at Daytona.

RE: My first diesel! My first tow report!

You need to rethink your driveing habits. The Cummins torque peak is at about 1500 RPM and is flat up to 2900 RPM. You can run it all day long at 1600- 1700 RPM and not hurt it. It will also help your mileage at lower rpm.

RE: Dometic Recall - NO LONGER REPLACING COOLING UNIT

We took our '06 5th wheel in the 10th to get it winterized and a couple other things. I mentioned that we had a Dometic on the recall list. They it said it will be taken care of. No charge. I really don't understand some of these people. Dometic goes out of their way to fix and these characters are yelling "class action". I guess that is a problem for me, being born in the early '30s, I grew up with the idea that a handshake was a contract and a man's word was his bond. My, how things have changed. Everybody wants something for nothing, and if you irritate me, I'll sue you!!

RE: Final Results Chrysler/48RE Drama

:C When we bought the Dodge, it was because it was the only truck with an engine.(mho) I had two Chrysler products prior to my first Dodge pu and had bad luck with both. The first was a 1940 Plymouth that was a beater to start with. The second was an '87 Chrysler 5th Ave. that the paint started peeling before it had 20,000 on it and Chrysler wouldn't do anything about. The first Dodge/Cummins was a '01 that had 17,000 on it when we got it. Traded it at 50,000 a year and a half later 'cause my girl friend heard how quiet the '05s were. This one with the auto tranny came with a 7yr/70,000 mile drive train warranty. I'm not sure of the warranties on other makes. Perhaps someone can enlighten me.:W

RE: How slow is unsafe?

These "experts" on here amuse me no end. It seems they missed the meaning of the second sentence of my first post. "...it CAN mean...". That would depend on the mood of the LEO at that particular time and how much you mouthed off. And, again, different states look at it differently. Burn's Indiana Statutes say that "Anything over the speed limit is Prima Facie evidence of reckless driving." But unless your 20 MPH over (automatic reckless driving) or mouthy, it'll go as speeding. You can also get a ticket for speeding if your driving less than the limit. It's called "Driving too fast for conditions." Some time ago someone on here complained he'd gotten stopped in New Jersy for not signaling a lane change. "Whoever heard of such a thing?" were his words. When checking, he was from Michigan. Not surprising, they don't signal anything there!

RE: How slow is unsafe?

This is the law as written in the Indiana motor vehicl code: IC 9-21-5-7 Reduction of speed; impeding normal and reasonable movement; right-of-way to other vehicles Sec. 7. A person may not drive a motor vehicle at a slow speed that impedes or blocks the normal and reasonable movement of traffic, except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with the law. A person who is driving at a slow speed so that three (3) or more other vehicles are blocked and cannot pass on the left around the vehicle shall give right-of-way to the other vehicles by pulling off to the right of the right lane at the earliest reasonable opportunity and allowing the blocked vehicles to pass. As added by P.L.2-1991, SEC.

RE: How slow is unsafe?

Some roads (or states) will have posted minimums, others will write the law to say "one will not drive so slow as to impede the NORMAL flow of traffic". That can mean that if the road has a 60 MPH speed limit and everyone is going 70+ but you, you're "impeding the normal flow of traffic."
